The Call
The Call follows Eva, a young artist, and her relationship to Jack, Eva’s grandfather, as she approaches the beginning of her life and he comes to the end of his.
During her final year at UVA, Jess took a yearlong filmmaking course called the Overcranked Film Project. The class focused on Screenwriting in the fall semester, taught by Doug Grissom. Then the class focused on directing film in the spring, taught by Academy Award winner Paul Wagner. Drawing inspiration from her real-life grandpa, and applying all she learned in class, The Call is the result of Jess’ year in Overcranked!
Jess wrote and directed The Call, but couldn’t have made her vision into a fully produced short film without frequent collaborators Drew McCarter, Director of Photography and Artistic Counsel, and Anna Brotman Krass, starring as Eva. A mixture of fresh faces and old friends made up the crew - Jess is grateful for each person involved, the role they played in the making of her first short film, and the memories and friendships they now share.
