More Info on Past involvements

University of Virginia Department of Drama

During her years studying at UVA, Jess played many roles in the Drama Department. She acted in productions of The Comedy of Errors, Shipwrecked!, and We Are Pussy Riot of Everything is P.R. She assistant staged managed Mr. Burns. She worked as a lighting technician on TCOE and Mr. Burns. She worked as a scenic technician on Pussy Riot and Seven Guitars. After graduating, Jess was hired by the department in January 2019. She was employed in multiple technician roles for the spring semester - her jobs ran the gamut from run crew to sound board to fly operator.

In May 2018, Jess performed in Just Like Us, the first show in the Diversity and Inclusion reading series. In January 2019, she was invited to return to the project as Assistant Producer. She was proud to serve as assistant producer for three installations of the series!

Smokin Willy BBQ Catering

Joining the team shortly after graduating from high school, Jess began working with Smokin Willy in May 2014. She never knew how her summer job would expand over the next five years of event seasons.

Each year Jess took on a new role, from waitstaff to bartender to grill cook and on, growing within each role and utilizing each skill she learned. In early 2018, she negotiated taking on more responsibility and became an Event Lead for the 2018 season. Between meeting with clients and managing event teams, this was the ultimate way to serve her final season with the company. Jess worked her last wedding with Smokin Willy in November 2018 after five years of amazing experience!

Overcranked Film Project

Jess worked as a screenwriter and director in the Overcranked Film Project, Inaugural 2018 class. As a member of the original group of eleven, Jess feels incredibly proud to have participated in Overcranked!

The Overcranked Film Project is a yearlong filmmaking course at UVA. The class focused on Screenwriting in the fall semester, taught by Doug Grissom. Then the class focused on directing film in the spring, taught by Academy Award winner Paul Wagner. Jess is grateful every day for Doug, Paul, and Overcranked for helping her create The Call!

Heritage Theatre Festival

During Heritage Theatre Festival’s 2017 season, Jess worked as the Production Stage Manager for the show Chapatti. The show is a heartwarming two-hander that HTF staged in the Helms blackbox theater. Working in a small space with only two actors, the intimate process proved the ideal vehicle for Jess’ foray into professional production management.

During the other four shows of the season, Jess worked in the Box Office and as House Manager. These roles allowed her to utilize her excellent customer service and communication skills, both on the phone and in person.

Arts Grounds Guides

Joining in the second year after AGG’s founding, Jess served as a UVA Arts Grounds Tour Guide for two and a half years. The Arts Grounds Guides provide an opportunity for arts-interested prospective students to explore UVA's ever-developing Arts Grounds and facilities, and to learn about the myriad academic and extra-curricular opportunities available to creative Cavaliers.

Alternative Spring Break

Alternative Spring Break is an entirely student-run service organization established in 1992 to conduct service projects during spring break for University of Virginia students. Jess first joined ASB as a participant on a 2016 trip to Seattle, WA, volunteering in parks across the city. The next year, she co-led a trip to Anastasia State Park in St. Augustine, FL. Across the week, she worked with her co-leader and team of eight other students to restore the park’s boardwalk, that had sustained damages during hurricane Matthew.

Virginia Players

Virginia Players started in the 1920s as a student club dedicated to producing plays due to a lack of a drama program at UVA. Today, Virginia Players is a student run organization committed to providing opportunities to refine artistic skills, connect with professionals within and outside the department, and bridge the gap between student theater and the Drama Department. Jess served as Artistic Director for the 2016 school year.

First Year Players

First Year Players is the largest and oldest student-run theater organization at the University of Virginia. FYP remains true to its two-fold mission: to create an artistic, supportive atmosphere for students in their first year at UVA, and to provide the UVA community with quality musical theater.

After two semesters in the cast during her first year, Jess served as Social Chair in the Fall semester 2015. Since a robust and supportive social atmosphere is a part of the mission, Social Chair is a crucial role on FYP Production Staff.
